On July 1st activists, artists, hip-hop enthusiasts, and Montrealers gathered in the Mile-End to hold a celebration in protest of Canada Day. The event aimed to support the Indigenous community and raise money for a recent project launched by the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal/Foyer Pour Femmes, Iskweu. Among the performers were The Rap Battles for Social Justice, Daybi, Rupert Common, DJ Lady Oracle, Janette King, Marino Ahau, and Moe Clark. The event opposing Canada Day was among many others across the country in light of the recent unearthing of over 1500 children and youths’ bodies at residential schools.
